Houses for Haiti

Final service project is creating an image to donate to Houses for Haiti. You will need to find/purchase a substrate (that means the thing you are going to paint/draw)to create this image on. These will not be provided by the art department. I'm expected to see amazing images, with lots of time, care and thought put into it. This will be graded.

I know that for most of you the end of the year is creeping up on you and that you are feeling done with school. Please take the time to go to this website and be inspired. http://www.housesforhaiti.org/

Big Week Ahead

This is a big exciting week for all of us. The AP Art Showcase is on Thursday from 4 - 7pm.

What you need, the sooner the better...

1. Your concentration/artist statement matted on black board ready to go by Thursday at 11:00

2. All your concentration pieces, matted, ready to go by Thursday at 11:00. If your work is done now and hasn't been photographed PLEASE bring it to the art room ASAP so that we can get that done.

3. Dessert for 10 people.

4. You are responsible for set up and tear down of your own work as well as helping out with the clean up after the show. We all stay until it's done. It usually takes about 20 minutes if everyone helps out.

5. Seniors please make sure I have the yellow form with the information about where you are going to school next year etc.

6. NAHS hours are due on the 19th of May. The sooner you get those in the better.

7. Smiles, this is your party to celebrate your work! Invite your friends, your teachers, your family.

Off to the National Art Educators Conference

This next week I will be at the National Art Educators conference learning all kinds of new things and sharing our blogspot with other art educators. While I'm gone you all need to be working hard on your last concentration pieces.

There has been some confusion on when the AP Art Showcase is. The actual for sure date of the AP Art Showcase is April 29th, Thursday. You will display all your concentration pieces at the show.

You might want to begin bring that work in, getting it matted and ready for display. When I get back we will need to buckle down and be ready to rock and roll. The showcase is a great opportunity for us to celebrate all your hard work and show off what you have been up to. Ms. Burnham is creating postcards for the showcase and will have those done soon. You can invite all your family and friends for this great night. The event will go from 4 - 7 pm. You will be responsible for hanging, labeling and preparing all your own work. Each of you will need to bring a dessert for the evening, enough to share with at least 10 people.

Critique - Wednesday?

Okay - If we have class on Tuesday the critique is Tuesday, if we have class on Mon/Wed the critique is Wednesday.

I don't get the schedule and frankly I can't remember if we are a blue day or white day class. I have 52 school days left to figure it out. Yes that's right 52 school days for Seniors and 60ish for everyone else. Wow!

Critique - Tuesday 30th

Our second to the last critique is this Tuesday! Yikes. You still need to do a blog update/sketchbook and a blog comment. You'll survive.

I want you to plan on working on your next pieces in class on Tuesday. You have three pieces due in April and you will need all the class time you can get. For the critique I will work with each of you to photograph your new pieces. That work will need to get on your blog so that students from other schools can critique your work. So to recap.....

Tuesday - Blog comment, sketchbook/update, two pieces of art. One at a time Ms McB will call you into the darkroom, talk about your work, teach you how to photograph it, etc. You will work on your next concentration pieces while you wait to photograph. Sometime during the week you need to get those images and post them onto your blog.

The final three pieces will need to be done by the AP Art Showcase which is April 29th. This is such a great event where we all all get to celebrate the amazing work you have done. Almost finished!

Cow Committee

It's crunch time for the cow. The cow needs to be done by the 9th of April. We need a dedicated bunch of painters. Do you want to be on the cow committee? Do you have early release? Late arrival? Willing to stay after school a few days? Would you be willing to spend some of that time working on the cow. Let us know, we need to start tomorrow, yes tomorrow getting to work. We have a life drawing session on March 31, 2010 from 6:30 - 8:00. Usually we have the models for two hours so we will most likely work straight through with a tiny break. The belly dancers are excited to come again.

Thoughts on Blogging

So I've reconnected with Communication Arts and I have to say, I'm a big fan. I posted part of an article on ownership last month this month there is a great article titled, Blogging with a Different Perspective. Great stuff. Here are some nuggets to ponder.

"Blog, blog, blog. Every time I thought about starting to blog, I felt annoyed and guilty. Each new blog I came across increased the pressure to have one. I have my reasons for avoiding the task. First, I don't like throwing my opinions or visual concepts into a public space without giving them time for considerations and refinement. Second, if I think someone is looking over my shoulder, I am self-conscious about having bad ideas, which is a surefire way to crush the seedling of a good idea. Third, I resent the obligation of posting on a regular basis, whether I have something to new to present or not.....

I began to see a different perspective: Blogging in the original sense ('blog' of course, is a contraction of 'web log') can be a tool to foster and reflect upon the development of one's work. So instead of using the blog as a way of speaking out, I realized I could use it to speak in."

Other nuggets out of context but interesting:

'But a blog, because of it's nature, gives permission - even encouragement - to share work in progress. One of the toughest battles in the creative process is to maintain a balance between keeping ideas open and making conclusive decisions.'

The late artist Agnes Martin said, "The bad paintings have to be painted and to the artist are more valuable than those paintings later brought before the public." Keeping a log of the so-called bad ideas is a great way to see the evolution of your work. Often when you look back, you see discarded elements that may now have value.

"Like most artists, I need to have deadlines and destinations for my work. But even with those two taskmasters, day to day progress can be difficult. A blog is a sort of personal trainer. And as I think about the nagging requirements of having something new for each entry, I remember one of my own basic rules: By seeing what repeats you discover what has lasting value. A blog lets you fast-rewind and fast-forward."

Scholastic Madness & More

Amazing artists abound at Lakeridge High School. I'm so proud of all of you! The reception was nuts! It's time to rethink how to make that experience more meaningful and not so crazy. Too many people, I guess that's a good problem to have.

Your next concentration pieces, two of them, will be due the day of finals for AP. We won't have a critique because we will be putting together your breath sections of your portfolio. I'll have Breanna take photos of your new work and we will post them on the blog next week to talk about.

Don't forget:

1. Two concentration pieces due Finals day.

2. Bring in all artwork I need for the breath section of my portfolio to be photographed. This week :)

3. Putting together breath section of portfolio on Finals day. This is worth 50 % of your grade. Yikes :)

National Portfolio Day - Sunday January 10th

National Portfolio Day happens in Portland on Sunday January 10th. I forgot to add this onto your update I gave you the other day. It's a great event where you get to talk with admission directors from art colleges and universities around the country.

It's a required part of AP. We will prepare for it in class the week after we get back from the break. Most student really enjoy the process and find it interesting to hear what others have to say about your work. Besides, you get to go downtown, hang out and have lunch with your friends.

The Scholastic Art Awards show will be up at PNCA which is were the portfolio days will be held. You'll be killing two birds with one stone, see the show and get your work critiqued.

Mark it down on your calender.

OCAC Student Juried Show

I had the pleasure of being a juror this last week for the Oregon College of Art and Craft, student juried show. It was fun to see the amazing variety of student work. The evening of the reception I saw two LHS art department alumni. Jenna Blanchard, 04, had two pieces in the show. The jury process was blind so I didn't know who's work was who's. I loved both of her pieces! The food made from fabric was impeciably created and so whitty. Ali Balter, 09, was there as well. She didn't enter the show but it was great to see her. She is enjoying her experience at OCAC. If you get an opportunity this month you should stop by and see the show. It would be worth it.

New Leonardo found with fingerprint?

Art experts agree that $19,000 painting is actually a Leonardo da Vinci worth $150 million. A fingerprint links this piece to the famed artist.

If true, this would be the first Leonardo artwork found in 100 years.

LIFE DRAWING - Wahooooooo

The first life drawing will be on November 17th, 2009. That's a Tuesday, folks. All AP and Art 3/4 students are required to attend. There are only two life drawing sessions this year. One per semester.

We will be drawing lovely ballerinas. They will have tu tu's. So much fun. $5.00 per person, snacks and materials provided.

Art show opportunity

Last year I was in a show called the Beaverton Visual Arts Showcase. I found out there is no age limit for entrants so I think you all should do it. You have to register here https://www.callforentry.org/ The deadline to enter is October 30th, 2009.

Visual artists in the Portland region are invited to submit their work to Beaverton’s 2010 Visual Arts Showcase to be held February 7-20, 2010, in the Beaverton City Library.

It's not hard. You will have to resize your images which is a little tricky. I can help you at school if your interested. The shoe projects, the magazine portraits, AP work, Karen your drawing...the list goes on. Just do it. It doesn't cost anything and it's a good experience.

Open Studios 2-D NAHS

A small but mighty group of NAHS 2-D students went to open studios today. What a great experience. Lindsay video taped several of the artist in their studio and will be posting them on the NAHS page as well as on her own blog. We loved William Park's work. He works very similar to Jesse Reno's style. Very different subject matter. We also found a very cool studio where we can go and sew. Melis, we are thinking this will be fun for the retro outfits! Anyway, highly recommend this experience. Karen Shea has the map and the studios are open tomorrow. There are several in the LO area if you decide to give it a whirl. So worth it. Very inspiring. Off to my own studio to make some art!

Ownership

In the most recent issue of Communication Arts there was article I read last night and it stuck with me all day. I would like you to consider, what do you own?

"Ownership means being involved with something, putting in an investment of energy, caring and learning. You own what you are committed to."

Consider the subject of ownership, you are usually dealing with a specific problem or task or object. Was this stock a bad investment? Do I need liability insurance? Should I buy an iPhone? But if we think more broadly about ownership, it becomes more complex and more interesting. When I ask the question, "What do you own? What is the first things that comes to your mind? Your car? Your bank account? Or do you think of ownership in the non-physical realm of, say, friendship or faith or knowledge? Do you see ownership as a freedom, or are your possessions a burden? Does ownership imply yours vs. mine?

For years the authors mother told her that she was lucky because she has an important possession, one that she owns completely; her work. By that, she did not mean a job or a particular profession or even a talent. She means a commitment to creative endeavors to developing and producing objects and environments and to ways of thinking and looking. It is a crucial part of her identitity. She has cultivated it, grown it and she lives by it.

Think of your creative journey. All the years you've spent pursuing and developing your creative identity. You have worked to make it yours. Do you own it?

Fieldtrip Fun

What a great trip. I get so inspired by seeing art and meeting artists! I hope it was an inspiring trip for you and you got some good ideas on putting together a body of work. On the yellow itinerary, there are two assignments that were to be completed while we were on our trip, however, if you were just WAY too excited about the work at the time, be sure to do it at home in your sketchbook.

Please be sure to do the write-up for each gallery as well as the reflection on the trip itself.

Finish taking your A-Z pictures. You might want to label them in your sketchbook so you can remember the concept you were trying to capture. These will be due next Friday, October 2nd.

Jesse Reno

Jesse Reno workshop this weekend. You received a handout with directions and the day you are going to attend the workshop. Don't forget!!!!

If you have not paid your $50.00 you need to do that now. Please, pretty please. All the money goes to the artist. Jesse just sent out an email to his listserve which I am on, he is hosting a workshop for people two weekends from now, they are paying $650.00 EACH!!!! We got an amazing deal.

On the handout you received it listed the substrates (things you paint on) you will need for the Jesse Reno workshop as well as the materials you will need.

I would like you to bring all those things to class on Friday. If you do not have all the materials you need and the substrates and the $50.00 in by Friday you will not be going to the workshop. I know this sounds mean and intense but I was embarrassed that people were not prepared for the first artist in residence. Jesse is serious business and I worked very hard, for years actually, to get this opportunity. I need you to be prepared on Friday.

Get your blue handout, read it and get the stuff you need. Just put it in a big plastic bag with your name on it. I will bring the supplies to the workshop for you.

Brady Bunch Picture - Wednesday after school

Wednesday, September 23rd we will be taking the pictures for the AP poster. For those of you in sports this shouldn't take long and we can take pictures of you first. We will group (five people per square) ourselves on Monday. The girls will be with the girls, the boys with the boys. If you would like to bring something 70's to wear that would be great but not necessary. The picture will basically only be from your shoulders up. It would look groovy if you could find some retro clothes!

We could even take some of the pictures during class on Wednesday if you like. We'll talk about this on Monday. Just wanted to get it on your radar.

You've got 10 days left to sell your poster ads!!!! Don't wait until the last moment. You will be very surprised how supportive this community is. The worst thing that can happen is they will say no. Then you just move onto the next place.

You can do this!!! All the money raised is used for NAHS scholarships and events throughout the year. Karen and Lindsay are very excited about planning lots of fun events for us to participate in.

Deadline is the beginning of class on the 30th of September.

There are many things to remember for class on Tuesday. Fees, forms and making your blog. If you forget your $$ and fancy paper you will not be able to make a sketchbook and that would be sad.

There are so many things to remember your eyes might pop out of your head.

I can't tell you how excited I am that the new school year is starting. You are an amazing talented bunch of students who are going to kick some AP, well you know. This blog spot will become an important part of your daily/weekly routine. Everything that you need to know about what's going on in the AP class will be on this site. You will be creating your own blog spot that will be linked to this main site. It's a great way to share your work with your classmates, friends, family and the rest of the world.

Your first blogging assignment will be to create your site. It's easy. Ms. McB gave you lots of handouts to help you through the process. Have fun and make your site your own. I would like you to take pictures of your summer work and post it on your personal blog site as soon as possible.

Here is some of the work I did this summer....they are all encaustic pieces. The 'girls' as I call them are chickens that live in my back yard.
